Set in 1943 Los Angeles during the Zoot Suit Riots, APA Acting, Technical Theatre, and Costume Design present this reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as it places the star-crossed lovers in a city divided by culture and conflict. Romeo is the son of a white Navy family stationed in LA, while Juliet is a proud Chicana from the Capulet family, deeply rooted in the zoot suit–wearing Pachuco community. As racial tensions and violence escalate between servicemen and Mexican American youth, their forbidden love becomes even more dangerous. Amid prejudice, pride, and protest, the two must choose between loyalty to family and the transformative power of love in a time of war.

In the bygone era before the internet and content streaming, people first heard new music on the radio and occasionally saw their favorite artists on broadcast television. Then came the dawn of Cable TV and with it the promise of over 100 channels of content. When MTV started broadcasting in the summer of 1981, music fans had a new way of appreciating their favorite music - visually. The artists suddenly had to rely on not just their musical abilities, but they had to be photogenic too. The concept turned the music business on its head and for the next two decades, new hit artists and songs were mostly made on television. Music Television. Presented by APA’s MMET Popular Music, MMET Media, Costume Design, and Technical Theatre Students.
